How to License Photographs |
What is licensing? Licensing is the right to use our photographs. JCM Natural History Photography licenses the use of images to you, so that our images can make your article, advertisement, book, brochure, presentation or web site a success. Thus, JCM Natural History Photography does not sell the image; rather, you are permitted to use the image for a negotiated fee. The negotiation for the rights (license) to use these images and fees is between you and JCM Natural History Photography. How are fees determined? There is not a minimum fee per image, instead the price is based on the type of project (commercial, academic, advertising, print media, web site, etc.), how the image(s) need to be delivered, at what size the image(s) need to be used, in what countries will the image(s) be used (domestic vs international rights). Thus, for a quote how the images will be used needs to be understood. Discounted prices are available for clients using multiple images. Academics wanting a license for classroom use will have a much different license than an advertising agency wishing to to use an image for an international campaign. What if I just want a print to hang on my wall? Archive prints are available for any of the images on the web site. The image(s) will be printed on high quality paper and ship it to you. The cost of these ranges from $50-200 depending on the size and shipping. Can I use these images in my classroom or for my class project? Because this is a commercial venture these images do not fall under any "fair use" law unless they have been licensed to a textbook or web publisher. The time, travel, and expense of producing these images is considerable. They cannot be simply placed on a web site for a link or line of credit. They must be licensed. Licenses for academic uses are reasonably priced. |
