Books and Articles by John C. Murphy

Homalopsid Snakes: Evolution in the Mud (2007) surveys the 37 species of snakes in the family Homalopsidae. These Oriental and Australasian rear fanged snakes demonstrate a range of adaptations to freshwater, brackish water, and salt water environments, but almost all of them like muddy substrates. While most eat fish some have specialized to feed on crustaceans. The book looks at their natural history, and considers hypotheses about their place in snake phylogeny. It also includes an essay by Sharon Brooks et al. that updates what is known about the Tonle Sap snake harvest in Cambodia, most likely the largest snake harvest in history and the harvest is composed primarily of homalopsid snakes. Available from Krieger Publishing.

Amphibians and Reptiles of Trinidad and Tobago was published in 1997. It is based upon six field trips to the islands between 1982 and 1994, a survey of the literature, and examination of museum specimens. While the nomenclature of some taxa has changed, and new taxa have been added to the islands' fauna, it remains the only comprehensive work on the herpetofauna of these interesting continental islands. As new information becomes available the content of this book this book is updated in the Log section of this web site. The book is available from Krieger Publishing.

Tales of Giant Snakes: A Historical Natural History of Anacondas and Pythons was coauthored with Robert W. Henderson (Milwaukee Public Museum). It was published in 1997 and is based upon a review of the literature. The book examines what is known about the natural history of the four species of snakes known to exceed 20 feet (6.1 m). Those four species are the Anaconda (Eunectes murinus), the African Python (Python sebae), the Indian Python (Python molurus), and the Reticulated Python (Python reticulatus). The book examines size, food and feeding, reproduction, and interactions with humans. It is available from Krieger Publishing.
