Anura, Hylidae: Cricket Frogs & Chorus Frogs in the Genera Acris & Pseudacris
Florida Cricket Frog, Acris gryllus dorsalis Netting and Goin, 1945. Photographed in Central Florida, USA. In body form cricket frogs resemble small ranid frogs more than they do treefrogs, this is due to convergence. Both Acris and Rana use aquatic habitats, and generally don't climb into vegetation as do most hylids. The call is reminiscent of crickets and thus the common name. Note that the frog in the photo is calling from under a leaf, making it difficult for predators and photographers to locate it.

Mountain Chorus Frog, Pseudacris brachyphona (Cope, 1889). Vinton County, Ohio USA. This is an Appalachian species ranging from Pennsylvania to Alabama.
Little Grass Frog, Pseudacris ocularis (Bosc and Daudin, 1801). Central Florida, USA. The smallest frog in North America (17 mm maximum size in adults). It inhabits the coastal plain from Virginia to western Florida. This frog has also been placed in the genus Limnaoedus. It is relatively common in wet grassy areas.

Ornate Chorus Frog, Pseudacris ornata (Holbrook, 1836). It inhabits the
Atlantic Coastal Plain from North Carolina to central Florida and westward to southeastern Louisiana. Adults may reach 37 mm. Inhabits flooded forests and meadows, and spends considerable time below ground.

Illinois Chorus frog, Pseudacris streckeri illinoensis (P. Smith, 1951). Mason County, Illinois. This species spends most of its time underground, it comes to the surface to reproduce in late winter or early spring. Experiments have demonstrated that it feeds underground. This frog was not discovered until 1951, surprising since the State of Illinois had been searched many times before by herpetologists. However, its subterranean habits made it difficult to find.
