Anura: Arthroleptidae, Squeakers & Their Relatives |
|
| The squeaking frogs and their relatives inhabit sub-Saharan Africa. There are two subfamilies following Frost et al. (2006), the Arthroleptinae with seven genera and 132 species, and the Leptopelinae with 51 species in a single genus, Leptopelis. Frost et al. (2006, Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History, 2970) provided evidence that the Leptopelinae is the sister taxon of Arthroleptinae (which includes the astylosternines), and they transferred Leptopelinae (formerly considered a subfamily of the Hyperoliidae) from the Hyperoliidae into Arthroleptidae, the sister taxon of Hyperoliidae. | |
